In short
The Daily Atlas keeps what it needs to run your game and nothing more. If you make an account, your email address is the only personal information we keep, and only to send you sign-in codes.
The game will show ads in the future. There are none yet, and no analytics or trackers. Before ads go in, this page will say what they collect, and you'll be asked first where the law requires it.
Your game
When you start a game, your browser gets one cookie (__Host-atlas_session). It holds a random
code that tells the server which games are yours, and nothing else. It lasts 90 days and is renewed while you
play.
With it we keep your answers, scores and answer times, your streak, and the places you've found in Your Journey: that's how the server scores your game fairly and shows your results. If you play without an account, all of this is deleted once the cookie runs out (or within a day if you never start a game).
Your account
An account is optional. It keeps your Journey, streaks and scores on every device. To make one, or to sign in, you give your email address and we email you a 6-digit code; there is no password.
- Your email address is kept for as long as you have an account, and used only to send you sign-in codes. We never send newsletters, and never sell or share it.
- A code is kept, scrambled, for the 10 minutes it works.
- To stop people guessing codes, we count wrong guesses for each address for a few days (at most 7).
Deleting your account (Account, then Delete account) removes your email address, games, streak and Journey for good. The database's backups keep copies for up to 30 days, then those are gone too.
In your browser only
Your settings stay in your browser: whether sound is on (atlas.sound), Reduce animations
(atlas.motion), Extra time (atlas.extra-time), Use my phone's keyboard
(atlas.keyboard), miles or kilometres (atlas.units), and when you last opened Your
Journey (atlas.book.seen). Only
one is ever sent to us: when you start a game with Extra time on, the server notes it with that game, as it
sets the game's timer.
Who else is involved
- Cloudflare hosts the game and its database and sends the sign-in emails. Like any web host, it sees your IP address when you visit.
- The sign-in form is checked by Cloudflare Turnstile, which tells people from bots, so nobody can use the game to send emails to strangers. Your IP address is also used, for a minute, to limit how many codes can be asked for. We don't store it.
Apart from that check, everything the game loads, the fonts and the maps included, comes from the game itself: nothing is loaded from other websites.
Cookies
For now the game has one cookie, and it's needed for the game to work, so there's nothing to agree to. Ads will bring cookies of their own: we'll update this page before then and ask you first where the law requires it.
